An idea I've had for years and harbouring and working on and falling in love with over and over again has just been destroyed. It wasn't anything important, or feasible, or possible, or possibly even that good, but it was something I adored and I'm really sad about it now.

(In answer to your screened response - ahh you mean "A Single Man"?).
Well, without going into too much detail for the sake of your privacy, I can at least say that just because it has already appeared on screen and in book form in some manner does not mean that you cannot persist with your own interpretation. I mean, after all, how many ideas are exactly original these days? I know that the huge idea I'm currently working on is certainly very similar to several thousand of my own favourite books and movies (which gives you one up on me, since your idea was not actually even nicked from elsewhere...). And from what I can tell from what you've told me, it's a really fabulous idea and one which could certainly stand up to more than one interpreation! Seriously - don't be disheartened. I would just love to hear more about how you had been intending to approach the subject matter, so if you ever felt like sharing, I would be more than willing to lend an ear.

Wow, it was a book too? Man, now I feel retarded about getting all upset about me stealing an idea, even if I didn't have a clue it existed. I've been pretty good in the last few days about not thinking about it, because if I start up again I won't be able to stop. Maybe it's one of those ideas I'll come back to if I ever seriously get a chance to make it.

Eh, I'm the same way though, when it comes to "borrowing" from other writers and whatnot for story ideas. I think a lot of people do, but I like it because it kind of works as a jumping off point, ya know? I'm sure the vast majority of my stuff could be traced back to something I watched or read. And eventually, of course, everything anyone makes will all have a vague similarity to each other, haha.

Ahh! No, no! I think it's a good thing! Sometimes I think to much about one thing and don't do anything about anything else, I've been obsessing over this idea for years, I think it's about time I gave it a vacation.

(Do you have AIM by any chance? I always forget to ask.)
