So to distract myself from how hungry I am (I'm doing a 3-day fast because I've been feeling like garbage lately and I think it has a lot to do with my diet) I'm going the recs meme [livejournal.com profile] taversham posted, but kind of skewed to include all the fics under my "favoritefic" tag on my delicious. I thought about doing this when I came up with the tag the other day and then taversham doing the meme just inspired me to actually sit down and do it. That, and the starving helps.

First off, there's more than 7 here and even then I kind of hate parring it down that much because I know for a fact there's tons and tons of fic that I love that I just don't have linked yet, so you get "the 10 that I have right now" list instead. Secondly, all the fics in my lj memories are on my delicious anyway so I'm just using the "favoritefic" tag from there. In order by fandom:

P.S. Also, there's fics on here that aren't complete and utter smut but that's just me trying not to be a complete pervert. I fail at it most days, trust me. (I'm sure if I did another one of these, it would just be smut from one end to the other. Actually...hmm, I might do one that's all NC17 fics and just forgo the formalities...)

The Part You Throw Away by [livejournal.com profile] isagel
Fandom: Pirates of the Caribbean
Pairing: Sparrington (the OTP of course)
Rating: PG-13
Oh, this has got to one of the defining fics for this fandom. 10 years in the future and Norrington's got Sparrow in a cell awaiting the gallows. The small closed room dynamic works brilliantly for the characters (both of whom are associated with wide open spaces full of sea) especially the 10-years-older versions of themselves. It's a wonderful conversation fic that completely plays off the relationship of the two right up until the last few paragraphs, then it's killer: Norrington sets Sparrow free and by proxy, himself. I could rec it for the last lines alone:

Norrington lifts his gaze, looks Sparrow in the eye.

"There is what a man can do and what a man can't do," he says. "I cannot lose you, too."

The sound Jack makes is like a spoken heartbeat. With his free hand, he grips the back of the commodore's neck, pulls him forward until their lips meet across the body between them. There is jubilation in the kiss, and a passion too long restrained. They should be hurrying, but it feels to Norrington as though hours pass before they shift apart. As he rises, keys in hand, the taste of salt and sunlit water still fills his mouth.

He lets Jack lead the way out of the cell, but he doesn't need him to. The way to the ocean lies clear in his heart.

That kiss leaves me breathless.

Rating: Probably PG-13 or R
[livejournal.com profile] tacks is just brilliant with everything she writes (check out the epic The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot) but Red just gets me with the interchange of Jack's monologuing and the intimate conversations between him and James. As the beginning states, I wouldn't have picked red for "Jack's color" but he sets out to prove me wrong. I love her version of Jack's past and all the reasons she comes up with, and how despite the constant interjections of James into his inner thoughts, Jack tries to keep it up until:

red is the...

the

Oh christ, alright.

It is the dark flare between James’s legs and the moan he makes when Jack pushes deeper; the flush that spreads from across his high cheeks and his pulse thrumming under Jack’s lips and hands. Their shared laughter,

"…I knew that was what you meant."

"Did you. I have to say, good Comm--oh... fuck… you have got a dirty sense of humour hidden in there somewhere, haven’t you?"

"O-ahhh, yes, god, go…much deeper and you might just find it"

He just gives up and the rest is an ode to Jamie and them together. That "Oh christ, alright" gets me everytime. Utterly lyrical and wonderful.

Haha, got to the third entry before I dissolve into just smut. But hey, it's really awesomely written smut. Really startling pretty language, that kind of has an e.e. cummings thing with the way words are kind of thrown around in a stream of conciousness way. I'm not even sure what to quote because it's all so gorgeous and works so well together that picking out one bit is just insulting to the other stuff because it's all so good, so I'll just put this:

James came back to bed and fell heavily onto the poor mattress, jostling Jack and creating a valley the nearly-asleep pirate rolled into. "Fancy meeting you here, Mister Commodore Norrin'ton sir," he mumbled, voice thick with contentment. James didn't answer but rolled into him, so they lay chest to bare chest, legs lazily intertwined, arms falling as they may. But even so Jack pulled closer still, allowing nothing, not even empty air, to stand between them. He suctioned their two skins together, their sated bodies pressing flesh to flesh without warring lust in their way. Just James and Jack. James and Jack and James and JackandJamesandjackandjamesandjack.

PEOPLE, this fic created canon! Seriously! If you could hear me right now I'm just making noises because this fic may as well be fandom for all it's done. I don't think a fic has ever influenced any fandom as much as this one has. Every Sparrington cliche and most of the fanon that everyone has come to accept came from this. It's also one of the very first Sparrington fics I read and I am damn glad it was.

The whole thing is incredible for many reasons, but I'm specifically linking chapter one: Men of Our Word which I have reread so many times, I could quote it at people. There's nothing overt happening in the romance department until closer to the end but the way the characters are written might as well have been in the damn movie it's so perfect. I love the scene in the study like several dozen loving things.

"Dunno, mate. What's it worth to you?" In the dimness of the room, his dark eyes gleam with mirth and calculation.

I lean forward from the wall, glowering. "Certainly not your release, if that's what you're thinking."

"Hmm. Day's head start?"

"Not A Chance. For undead pirates? Yes. For society ladies you need a lower price racket, Sparrow."

"All right ... I get t'choose where we spend the next few hours together then. And that's my final offer."

I lift one eyebrow. "And just where would you suggest? Taking tea with the Governor?"

"Of course Not. That would violate the agreement t'begin with," Sparrow scoffs.

"Where, then?"

"Can't tell you... it's a surprise."

It's not perfect, in terms of writing really, but I think that's part of what actually makes it perfect, because in the end it's still fic, but it's fic that might as well be canon. (The first chapter is my favorite, but don't miss out on the rest of it because it's really quite enjoyable, especially pirate!Norrington and the duel scene")

Days of Our Unlives by [livejournal.com profile] kita0610 and guest writers
Fandom: Angel
Pairing: Angel/Spike
Rating: NC-17 all the way
It makes me giddy to rec this, seriously. Like it says on my delicious, I read this with a big grin on my face that makes my cheeks hurt. The first time I read this years ago, I laughed so hard I fell off my chair. Same thing happened the second time I read it, and the third, and so on. I have the lobster scene in a document on my computer so that I can reread it whenever I want to.

And it's not just funny, it's smutty as all get out. It's just one long smut fic wherein Angel and Spike go on domestic adventures and have sex in weird places. It's awesome. My personal favorite is "The Mall" chapters, and this image which pretty much sums up what I look and sound like when I read this:

Spike is laughing so hard now that sound isn`t even coming out, he is just rolling on the asphalt, wrapped in his duster like some bizzarre papoose run amuck.

The lobster scene is in Part 37: Comparison Shopping, which I highly recommend. The quality is much like Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series, i.e. it gets a little stale in the middle, but picks up again with "A Very DOOUL Christmas" and just rides out the rest on big waves of hilarity and awesome.

Interstitial by [livejournal.com profile] runpunkrun
Fandom: Smallville
Pairing: Clex (Clark/Lex)
Rating: NC-17 but it's really more of an R
Okay, this one and me have a lot of history together. Look back on my first posts here and know that I read Interstitial before that. You'll probably even be able to tell how much I love this fic from back then. This is pretty much the fic for me. I'm sure there's a little part on my soul that has "Interstitial" printed on it, that's how much this has influenced me and stuck with me through the years.

It's funny and smart and so well written and I love the situations she sticks these two in and how they handle them and, and...everything is just firing on all cylinders here. I could write an essay on how well Punk gets these two, how perfect they sound coming from her, damn better than anything the actual show writers could come up with. And it totally helps that I love seeing big epic characters in goofy little domestic settings. I can't even start on how utterly she gets the Clark/Lex relationship because I'd be here all day. And even the original character just adds to the fun, instead of hindering it like most do.

"You're telling me now," Lex says, suddenly closer than before. Clark opens his eyes to Lex and his knifelike gaze, the flaw on his lip pale against the flush of his aristocratic skin, and all Clark can think is that he had kissed this man and survived.

The First Four Years by [livejournal.com profile] runpunkrun
Fandom: Smallville
Pairing: Clex
Rating: NC-17 (and she means it this time!)
Another from Punk, pretty much cementing her as one of my all time favs. My delicious description sums it up pretty well: "One long sex scene, but punk doesn't waste a word." It really is one long sex scene with just a little plot thrown in to get the smut moving. But don't let that make you think this is just pr0n. Again, I really could go on about how perfect Punk's envisioning of the characters is, just know that if she didn't know how to write the characters there wouldn't be fic at all, everything happens as a result of the characterization. The dynamics between the two are so well written and thought out, it's the defining way to write these two, in my opinion.

This isn't the sexiest passage from the fic but it's one of my favs:

Thanks to thirteen grueling years in Smallville, Clark has learned to expect the unexpected. When he hears hoofbeats, he doesn't think horses or zebras. He thinks six-legged radioactive gazelles. It works with everything except for Lex because Lex is so screwed up on so many levels that it's never just one thing. It's horses, zebras, and gazelles, along with a couple stray antelopes and lizards. It's a big noisy mess, and all the running around and yelling only masks the problem.

For the first time since crashing into Lex, Clark finally understands what all the drama is about. Lex is afraid of being alone. He's afraid of not being alone. He's afraid of pity, of being second best, of being used, forgotten, misunderstood, unloved. Lex, like everyone else on earth, though he'd unleash an army of lizards and antelopes on you if you ever suggested such a thing, is just afraid.

Guh, and I totally forgot to mention how it's funny and sexy and revealing all at once, because that's how Punk works.

Whistling in the Dark by [livejournal.com profile] simple_man
Fandom: House
Pairing: House/Wilson
Rating: G/PG
This is probably not on many other people's favorite fics lists, if any others at all, but it so totally one of my favorites. House likes to whistle songs at Wilson. I love the songs he's picked and I can completely see House doing this. "Brown Eyed Girl" will always sound a little bit to me like House and Wilson now. Like I said in my comment: "Genius and damnably funny." It's really the last part though, the almost striptease and House's "Tease" that just kills me though.

Standing, he stretches, slowly, seductively, and reaches for his tie. With careful fingers, he loosens it, hips swaying just the slightest bit.

At the door, he looks back at a completely hypnotized House, and pitches the tie in his direction. Reflexively, House catches it, with a sharp bark of laughter, spots of color appearing on his cheeks. His glance at Wilson could almost be called bashful.

Wilson smiles, unbuttons the top button of his shirt, fingers moving slowly, but purposefully. He tilts his head to one side, as if in thought, then shakes his head. "No. I'm not that much of a slut. You're gonna have to buy me dinner if you expect to see the rest of the show."

House just nods dumbly, the tie stretched taut in his hands. After a moment, his face clears, and his eyes brighten with mischief. Recognizing the look, Wilson ducks into the hall, before House can get any ideas about furthering the show.

As he walks to his office, he's not surprised to hear House call after him loudly, "Tease!" He grins, not caring about the curious stares of the various people littering the hallway. He's got a song to find, and maybe some serious thinking to do, and possibly a visit to a therapist, because he's obviously lost his mind.

Pairing: House/Wilson (sorta), other
Rating: R
Not even a House/Wilson fic per say, but always a fic that's haunted me and kept me coming back through the years. Warning: deals with child abuse. The imagery is wonderful and almost frightning because it's so well thought out, where the couch is, what it looks like, etc. And when it jumps to the adult House and Wilson, she manages to say so much about the relationship in very little terms:

Wilson jumps and looks genuinely frightened for just a moment, an odd, lost expression on his face. He quickly schools his features back into calm, sedate Dr. Wilson, but House has noticed and files the information away in the mental attic section labeled "Jimmy Wilson -- Puzzlebox", to be picked over later.

Asphyxiation by [livejournal.com profile] _ares
Fandom: House
Pairing: House/Wilson (again, sorta)
Rating: R
Again, not necessarily a House/Wilson story, but more of a House and Wilson story. It could almost be an original piece of fiction if you just changed the names around, but that doesn't stop it from being a great House fanfic. There's so much interesting mythology created, but there's not really any explicit exposition, which just makes _ares an even better writer because you know what's going on despite that. I also love the feel of the writing, the tone works completely with the imagery and it flows so well. I don't really count the sequel among it, but it's there and it's still really really good.

James sinks lower into the lukewarm water, eyes closing and opening slowly in a feeble attempt to stay awake. “You’re drunk, House.” He knows he’s drunk if he’s admitting to his recklessness. “What the hell are you talking about?”

Greg leans against the tub and belches violently, his moment of clarity fleeting as he folds back into his drunken stupor. “I don’t know,” he mumbles. His eyes glaze over and his grip slackens on the edge of the tub. “I’m just... I think I’m... just... dru –”

James watches his friend’s head hit the bathmat with a soft thud. His head throbs and his neck cramped up from leaning awkwardly against the edge of the bathtub. He pushes aside his fears before dunking under the water – relinquishing the heat as he falls back asleep.

And, of course, there is everything [livejournal.com profile] euclase has ever written. I know it, you know it, she knows it. There's some fanfic writers out there who write the characters better than the people who created them, and they might as well hand over House and Wilson to her right now because this woman knows these characters like her own living hand. Go, spend a day, love it like your own child, whatever, just read them.

Okay well, I wish I had tons more, and in more than just four fandoms but my head's starting to swim cause I haven't eaten so I must go find other stuff to distract myself with.

That House/Wilson Whistling-y one is fantastic. I can't believe I've read that before, it's so lovely. I love House fics which are just fun.

And I've never seen Smallville (wikipedia makes it sound like Superman meets Sweet Valley High), but The First Four Years is really, really hot.

I love fun fics too, actually I think that's why I'm in some of the fandoms I'm in. Like Angel, you wouldn't think it, but there is a bunch of just goofy fun fics in that fandom.

OMG, Smallville is exactly like that. I had to stop watching after the fourth season because I just couldn't handle it anymore, but it had some of the best fic I've ever read. The First Four Years would definitely be on the top of my all smut list for sure.

Why michals! Are you implying that we garner no intellectual value from the readings of aforementioned fics and that the only useful thing we take away from them is thoughts of perversion and ways to become corrupt?

Because, if so, here here! *raises bottle of rum in toast* ^______________^

Thank you for the awesome recs! I've missed reading Sparrington, this is a sign to get back into it.

(And don't fast, seriously - fasting doesn't work, it makes you miserable and sick and messes up your system. Regular, healthy meals are the only way to go. Speak to someone if you feel out of your depth but don't screw up your health. I know this might sound like I'm being bossy but you are awesome and I just want you to be healthy and well. *hugs*)

Everyone seems to be coming back to Sparrington! I wish we could have a big ole fandom revival, that'd be awesome.

Don't worry, I didn't do an extreme fast, I allowed myself to eat a small each day. I'm long done with it, and how, I've been eating spam burgers all weekend ;)

Aww, I know I can count on you to be the sweetheart you are and worry about me! *hugs*
