Went to see The Prestige last night (because only David Bowie can conquer the combined awful of Christian Bale and Scarlett Johansson) with my friends. I'm not gonna get into how ticked I was with my friend Elena for getting there late (movie started at 6:45, I told her 6:30 because I know how late she usually is. She got there at 6:50). Anyway, here's the review:
This movie was a lot like The Island for me, a lot of unnecessary cruelty a bunch of plot lines and character development that conflicted with the original idea. First of all, Christian Bale's character and his acts of revenge reminded me of my brother when he punches me and I punch him back but then he punches me again for payback but it doesn't work that way 'cause I was getting back at him in the first place. I mean, you killed his wife and wouldn't admit it, he shoots off two of your fingers. It's not condoned or nice but it's understandable. So, to get back, Bale ruins his career, twice, and cripples him, while Bale's career is rising (part in thanks to the fact he's missing two fingers, nonetheless) and he's got a wife and daughter who love him. How's that fair?
It's just, why did Jackman's character, the more sympathetic of the two, has to have all the shit land on him? Bale's character (both of them) were assholes and they got two women, a daughter, the best trick in town for a successful show and Jackman has a limp and gets fired. Even what Jackman did with his clones was cruel and Bale's bitching about sacrifice even though Jackman probably knows more about that than Bale would ever. And he gets to go free, with his daughter, at the end of the movie? It's like Jeffery winning Project Runway, sure his tricks are good but he's such an asshole he doesn't deserve it. And what was with Michael Caine's character? Suddenly he'd let Jackman get killed and Bale run off with his daughter while the whole time he was supposed to be loyal to Jackman? And he thinks Bale getting hanged is going too far? He buried a guy alive with no reassurance that he wouldn't die before, if he was ever, dug up! It's just like that guy from The Island! So, yeah, I think Jackman's character got a raw deal and totally deserved to come out on top. And WTF's up with Bale's accent, annoying as hell.
Bowie was gorgeous, as per usual. Even with the mustache and a little paunch (guy's 60 years old and survived a heart attack last year, I think he deserves to look however he does. And she still looks better than most everyone his age) he was hot. And his character was so cool. I think the best thing about the movie was Tesla's side story. It was so intricate and more interesting than the main story. I wouldn't say that I'd want it to be a movie on it's own, it's so much cooler as a side story, but the main story needed to be stronger. Andy Serkis did really well too, I preferred his accent over Bale's anyway. The best scenes were any that included Bowie or that lightning orb thing.
